Back To School: One Week Away
Posted by Brent | Filed under Life
We are coming in the home stretch here. Summer is nearly over and Fall Semester is starting in one week. I can’t wait to just get back down to Greenville, SC, at North Greenville University. It’s gonna be a great semester. I’m taking 17 hours. The courses are’nt too hard though. As long as i study and get in a habit of it i should be fine. I really need to do well this semester. I will most likely be leading worship at Dunean Baptist Church for the youth on Wednesday evenings. I’m also going to be on a impact team again. So that would be fun. I’m also looking foward to a new cafe place coming up on campus. It seems like it will be a nice place for a latte, bagel, and free wireless internet; a very chill place. The best thing i’m looking foward to is hanging out with old friends, and even making a few new ones. There’s a lot of catching up to do, so i can’t wait until i get there.

Worship. Not Whoreship.
Posted by Brent | Filed under Life
Last night I read the bible. Not because i know I’m suppose to. I read it because i wanted to. That’s what I’ve been yearning for. A desire to be in God’s word. Last night i had that desire. So i read the book of Malachi. Not a long book by any means, but it was really powerful. If i could summary the book of Malachi in one sentence it would be this: I am nothing, and I need a savior. The last book of the Old Testament at that time the Hebrew bible, written by Malachi around 430 B.C. to the Jews who were in Jerusalem. Malachi’s purpose was to confront the people of their sins and to restore their relationship with God.
So what exactly were the Jewish people doing wrong? Well the bible calls it Spiritual Whoreship. They were playing god. The Jews were offering defiled sacrifices to God, who is only worthy of the best. God never accepts profane worship. The third of the ten commandments God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai was to never take the LORD’s name in vain. This is exactly what these Jews were doing. They were saying they love God. But they didn’t.
I have found the same accusation to be true in my own life. I go to the place of worship, and sing songs to honor God’s name, lifting Him up in praise and in song. I offer to pray in front of the Church. I am a kind, caring person to people i come in contact with. But am i really in love with God? Do i yearn to be only with Him? No i do not.
If two people are married, and the wife is not faithful to the husband, should the husband continue to accept the wife’s “love” she offers to him? By no means. Then why should God, the creator of the universe, and king of Heaven and all of earth, accept our whoreship, or what we see as worship. You see God cannot be mocked. He always gets the last word. The LORD of heaven’s armies is a god of power, a god of justice, and a god of love. These must go together, are he wouldn’t be any of them.
God wants to be in a relationship with us, but we need a savior. In order to have a savior, he must be our lord. We must follow his ways, and not our own. If we love God, we will worship him. God does not want to see our shows. God wants justice. God does not want our religion. He wants our love. God does not want our whoreship. He wants our worship.
Below is a song by Jon Foreman, called “Instead of A Show.” Instead of a show in God’s place of worship, He wants a flow of Justice. You can listen to the song by clicking the link below.

Are We Cheapening Our Faith?
Posted by Brent | Filed under Articles
This is an article i found at RELEVANTMagazine.com. I really liked what it said so i posted it.
“Give Satan an inch, and he’ll be a ruler”. As I read these words from a recent church marquee, I couldn’t help but to laugh and turn my car around to take a photo. I would pay big bucks to be in the congregational business meeting when the church was looking for a new evangelistic catch phrase to scroll across their marquee:
“The last order of business for this quarter’s business meeting consists of what will now fill our church marquee. Remember that people daily drive by the marquee and nearly wreck into the nativity scene contemplating how these evangelistic statements can be applied in their lives. Momentarily I’ll ask for a motion to vote so that I can then ask for a motion to vote between “Give Satan an inch, and he’ll be a ruler” versus “Prevent truth decay by brushing up on your Bible.”

A Very “Keane” Saturday
Posted by Brent | Filed under Life, Uncategorized
Hey everyone. Just wanted to give an update of the life of brent up here, for those who actully read this thing. This weekend has been pretty good so far. This morning i went to my church at 8:30am to help pass out some propaganda around in our community. Ok… propaganda sounds bad. Ha, well they were flyers and brochures infroming the people around us of the upcoming ministries we got going on. Those would be our first Upward Soccer season in the fall, and Vacation Bible School in Late July. So i’m pretty excited about that. I also had to help film a video for a VBS skit we will show tomorrow morning. Well, we were going to show it. Turns out there is no way to capture the video to ethier my computer or my brothers computer. Thus, we can’t edit it. So we can’t show it. Sucks. But its all good. Maybe we can get it done somehow that we can show it next sunday.
Maybe. But anyway… This weekend has been pretty good so far, and i just want to leave you with a little slice or something for the road. If you havn’t already, you should really check out the britpop, rock band Keane. They have been compared to Coldplay and Snow Patrol. If you like a melodic sound that you can chill to, give them a listen. You won’t regret it.

Hitting The Shelves: 6/24 (Extended Edition)
Posted by Brent | Filed under Hitting The Shelves, Life
Well. It’s Wednesday. I figured i could talk about some of the new releases that came out yesterday. There were quite a few good ones. Here’s what hit the shelves that is actually worth buying:
- Kutless - To Know That You’re Alive
- Seabird - ‘Till We See The Shore
- Jon Foreman - Spring/Summer
Now i don’t know really what to expect from Kutless. I’ve listened to a new single from the album, and it sounds pretty solid, but it’s a little bland, so i’m not really sure. I will get the album though. Seabird is a band i’ve really been looking foward to. I havn’t heard anything but good stuff from them. With a melodic sound which could be compared to Needtobreathe, they bring a lot to the table. I reccomend letting your ears hear this one. Jon Foreman has always been a favorite of mine, so i know his stuff will be good. Another great release.
In other news, my church has been looking for a youth minister, and well, from the looks of it, we’ve found a guy. So that is great news. His name is Matt McCabe. He’s 24, from Texas, and he’s about to get married to his fiance, Anna. He’s only starting off part time, but i guess we see how things go. I’m really excited about this for our youth group. Maybe we can get the college ministry kickin’ as well.
I’m not really doing much today, just youth worship tonight, as usual. So i guess i’ll be planning that. That’s ’bout it.
